New AFL outfit, the Breakers, to hold first training session
HISTORY will be made this Tuesday at Jetty Beach from 6pm, with the first official training run of the newly formed Coffs Harbour Breakers AFL Club.
Coffs Harbour Swans and North Coffs Kangaroos have joined forces with 2014 Swans coach Jay Guthrie taking on the role as head coach.
"We want to make training and playing AFL more enjoyable," Guthrie said.
"In some regions training is all about running and more running, whereas we will mix it up and be more fun for all ages.'
To get the new club off the ground, corporate partnerships have been formed with Coffs Harbour Golf Club and the Plantation Hotel. Local businessman Ray Ellicott is the inaugural president.
"It's a positive note for the community and we will get as many locals involved as possible," Ellicott said.
"The idea of the Coffs Harbour-based businesses and sports community supporting one team is a beauty, a bit like the old 'one-town one-team' motto when we were younger."
Breakers will enter teams in all grades from Auskick and juniors, up to the standard-bearing senior team.
The season begins on April 11, culminating in the grand final on August 22.
Some coaching positions are open, so send an email or call Ray on 0418 654 544 or Jason Sincock on 0429 000 714.
The club will have a playing base at Fitzroy Oval but look forward to playing the odd game at Leisure Park when it is free.
Breakers will also field teams in the Wednesday night netball competition.
The club will hold its first annual general meeting at the Plantation Hotel on Sunday, February 1, at 11am.
This will be followed by a round of golf at 3.15pm.
There will be social golf played on the first Sunday of each month.
