DIGGERS Beach surfer Alex Swadling is off to the State titles after claiming victory in the open men’s division at the North Coast Regional Titles.
Swadling mastered the awesome conditions at Sawtell Beach on the weekend and will now be chasing a State title in July at Kiama.
The road to the south coast wasn’t an easy one though for the 18-year-old.
Despite the enforced injury absence of Sawtell’s Billy Kean who was the pre-event favourite, Swadling faced some stiff competition on the way to the victory dais.
In the final the natural footer had to pit his skills and local knowledge against the accomplished trio of Isaac van Anen, Will Coy and Rio Grieves.
Grieves was in sensational form during the early rounds riding two great barrels that had the healthy crowd cheering with delight.
The South-west winds were providing solid three to five foot peaking waves and it was Swadling who performed best under the intense pressure that a final brings.
