Suspicious package shuts down part of CBD

A SUSPICIOUS package shut down a part of Melbourne's CBD overnight as bomb squads worked identified the contents.

Parts of Lonsdale and Russell streets were cordoned off as authorities assessed the package, with businesses in the area being evacuated.

Bomb squads declared the package safe at around 12.45am, several hours after it was discovered.

The small suspicious package was found next to parked cars near the QV department store.

Despite the area being reopened to the public a heavily police presence remains on the scene as a precaution
