Survivor's message of hope

EMILY O'Brien survived five days and four nights lost in the bush wearing nothing but a bikini.

The 25-year-old became separated from a friend during a day trip to the Springbrook National Park on the Gold Coast hinterland.

As the search for missing bushwalker Sean Russell enters its fifth day, Ms O'Brien knows the situation all too well.

Last seen late on Saturday, Mr Russell would now have spent five freezing nights in the dense bushland of Mt Dalrymple.

Speaking exclusively with the Daily Mercury, Ms O'Brien said she had no doubt he was still alive.

"He would be trying to hang on," she said.

"I know for a fact he is holding on."

Ms O'Brien said during her four-night ordeal she barely slept.

"You get about two to three hours of sleep a night," she said.

"I pulled down palm leaves and made a burrow, I tried to build a shelter. It rained every night I was there, which made it so cold."

The colder it got, the less she slept.

Despite not having eaten for days, Ms O'Brien said she was "surprisingly not that hungry" during the ordeal.

"I stayed within 2km of the river for water supply," she said.

"All I was thinking about was the cold. But on the last morning I was thinking about chocolate."

She said she worried about spending another week lost but knew people were looking for her.

Her message to Mr Russell's wife was to not give up.

"Hold on, someone will find him," she said.

"I know for a fact he will be holding on. I want to encourage the searchers, the SES, the Army to keep hope and keep searching."
