Surveyors looking to protect coastline

SURVEYORS from across NSW will be in Ballina next week to discuss how to preserve our fragile coastline.

The Coastal Sustainability Conference, held by the NSW Country Surveyors Association and the Association of Consulting Surveyors, aims to inform 140 industry workers about their role in the use and protection of the NSW coastline.

Local surveyor Chris Abbott said, given the well-publicised erosion problems at Belongil and Wooli, Ballina was well placed to host the annual conference at the Ballina Beach Resort next weekend.

“There are a lot of surveyors who are aware of what is going on because it is in the media but I don't think many surveyors know what they can do,” he said.

“We are trying to make surveyors aware that they can be part of the process where we can assist and provide to our capabilities.”

The conference will also see local town planner Steve Connelly speak about the challenges coastal towns like Ballina may face in the next 20 years.
