Survey shows Aldi on top for cheap groceries

SHOPPERS looking for the cheapest basket of groceries should head to Aldi, an independent supermarket price survey has found.

The Choice survey reviewed the price of a basket of 31 comparable products sold at Aldi, Coles and Woolworths from 93 supermarkets.

It found consumers would pay about half the price on the goods at Aldi, at $87.68; compared with Coles and Woolworths, at $174.97 and $176.77, respectively.

While the survey included private brands and leading brands from both major supermarkets, Aldi stocked only private brand products.

Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said the survey showed private label sales would keep growing and "Aldi is in the box seat".

"When it comes to private label, which now accounts for 21% of packaged grocery sales, Aldi ($87.68) still had the cheapest basket, coming in 23% less than Coles ($114.24) and 27% less than Woolworths ($119.40)," he said.
