Surf's up for visitors

THE skies were grey and the surf was flat but nothing was going to stop Gary Phillips (right) from hitting Sawtell Beach yesterday.

Gary is back in his home town for a break from Malaysia where the former soccer star now lives.

Local tourism officials are unsure if the bleak weather will affect the number  of holidaymakers this summer.

Manager at the Coffs Visitor Information Centre, Brian Bowers, said numbers are good so far but, overall, it depends whether there is a second surge after the New Year.

“The past two days have been nearly full,” he said.

“There are pockets of accommodation available but it’s getting very restricted.

“The weather will determine if people stay on and the New Year will be make or break.”
