Surfing the 'cresty' end of series
THE World Qualifying Series is in full swing and coming down to the business end of the season.
With only three major events left and two of these in Hawaii - a place where points can be difficult to come by as all the World Championship Tour surfers will be competing - it is going to be extremely difficult to get the result so critical to making that top 15 cut on the ratings.
Shaun Cansdell surfed his way to an equal-fifth placing in the Canary Islands last week and picked up some valuable points which helped him climb up to 25th place on the WQS ratings.
He now is needing a possible finals finish in one of the remaining events of 2008.
Hawaii is a place Shaun has done well before and will really suit his surfing style, once he gets into the solid waves of the north shore on Oahu Island.
He still has the current event in Portugal to grab a last-minute result before heading out of Europe and we all wish him the best of luck.
LOCAL boys Jayke Sharpe, Madison Williams and Heath Joske, after all finishing in the top three of the last event of the 2008 Pro Junior series at Bells Beach in the last event of their pro junior careers, are now heading down the next path to the World Qualifying Series.
Jayke was quick to grab some extra points in Santa Cruz, California, early in the week.
He posted the single highest wave of round two and was praised by the US media, which is awesome news for the Sandy Beach youngster.
I will fill you in later on how all the guys went in this week's events.
THE Rip Curl 'Girls go Surfing Day' is coming back to the Coffs Coast on the weekend of November 15-16.
The event is at Coffs Harbour (Saturday) and Sawtell (Sunday) and if you would like to participate or find out more info, call 6650 0050.
