Locals surfers to carve at Australian Boardriders Battle
THE NORTH coast gets its turn to host a round of the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle at Yamba this weekend.
Former ASP Tour professional Lee Winkler will captain the Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club team against 10 other northern NSW clubs trying to duke it out for a berth in the national final at Cronulla in January.
"As a boardriders club member, this is something we've been looking forward to all year," Winkler said.
"Coffs Harbour Boardriders are an extremely passionate club and we're all looking forward to competing in Yamba this weekend."
Winkler will be joined by fellow ex-ASP professional Shaun Cansdell and outstanding surfer Madison Williams.
Apart from Coffs, the clubs participating in the north coast round are Old Bar-Saltwater, Sawtell, Angourie, Byron Bay, Lennox Head-Ballina, Cabarita, Kingscliff, Evans Head (Half Tide) and Minnie Waters (Yuraygir).
Up-and-comers booked include Chris Zaffis (Angourie), James Wood (Lennox) and Jeames Young (Angourie).
The Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle is the country's biggest grassroots series, with $120,000 in prizemoney and involving more than 100 of the best clubs in the nation.
The finalists will be whittled down to the best 20 clubs for the Cronulla battle.
Each team will include one under-18, one over-35, one female and four open-age surfers.
The format sees teams battle it out in a women's division, five-person team division and a skins competition.
