Letter to the Editor - Wednesday, April 13: Support teachers

THE Sydney Morning Herald tells us Finland has the world's best education system.

I was fortunate to grow up in a time when Australian teachers were held in high esteem, and public education was of a superior standard.

Everything changed in the 1980s when teacher-bashing became a sport.

Since then it has been easy for governments to press the buttons of disaffected members of society by blaming teachers for the shortcomings of the system and threatening them with an ever-increasing workload.

Naturally this is reflected in the attitude of students.

In the last years before my retirement, the paperwork was eye-watering, much of this to counter litigation in the likely event a parent might sue the school or teacher for a student's meeting with an accident or other negative event.

Margaret England,
Korora
