82% support Australia-wide greyhound racing ban
AN OVERWHELMING majority of people have supported a call for the New South Wales blanket ban on greyhound racing to be extended across the country.
More than 22,000 people responded to an ABC Lateline poll asking whether the ban should be Australia-wide, with 82% believing other states and territories should follow NSW's lead.
Many respondents to the Facebook poll were calling for horse racing to be outlawed as well.
"Yes there should be a nationwide ban on greyhound racing and steeplechase horse racing as well," Ray Connor answered.
"Congratulations to Mike Baird for his stand on this animal cruelty in NSW."
Fewer than one-fifth of those surveyed were more cautious about shutting down an entire industry with the wave of a politician's pen.
"Not yet convinced that a ban is necessary or desirable," Susan Louise Pitt said.
"Better regulation, monitoring and compliance should be given a go.
"It is an important social and economic industry for some regions.
"And I do not want to see tens of thousands of dogs made redundant overnight."
The Baird Government's push to dismantle the industry because of widespread animal cruelty has created a tense dynamic in NSW politics, with several Nationals MPs breaking Coalition ranks to speak against the party line.
Meanwhile, the Greens have held a rally in Sydney suburb Newtown to applaud the government's stance, with more than 100 demonstrators turning up with their dogs on Sunday.
"The message from community members gathering to support the ban is clear - killing greyhounds for gambling is not okay," Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi said.
"It is disgraceful political opportunism for Labor to oppose a ban on greyhound racing after being confronted with all the evidence of the horrific animal cruelty in this industry.
"The best thing that members of parliament can do to help workers and animals in the greyhound racing industry is to back the ban and help develop a fair and humane transition plan."
Just a day earlier, Greyhound Racing NSW and Greyhounds As Pets hosted hundreds of dog lovers at Sydney racing track Wentworth Park for a greyhound adoption day - the first of its kind, prompted by the looming July 2017 industry shutdown.
The NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association has vowed to fight the ban, urging supporters to sign and return petitions before NSW Parliament resumes on August 2. - ARM NEWSDESK
