NBN rollout is here
SITE work and detailed planning has begun on the first stage rollout of the National Broadband Network in Coffs Harbour.
The NBN Co today unveiled the map of Coffs Harbour’s first fibre serving area module (FSAM), which covers about 3000 premises in West Coffs Harbour centred on Bray St.
The area includes Orara High School, Tyalla Public School, Baringa Private Hospital, Sports Central and the Bray St Complex, which includes the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium and the BCC Cinemas.
Coffs Harbour’s first area to have the high-speed fibre optic cable installed is bounded in the north by the North Coast rail line and on the south, east and west by Coffs Creek and is primarily a residential area.
A spokesman for the NBN said the area had been selected because it contained a high percentage of overhead wires and would allow testing of the new ribbon fibre cable in both overhead and underground locations.
The ribbon cable will be used for the first time in Coffs Harbour.
Detailed design work is expected to take three months, followed by remediation, construction and testing, before activation.
The first stage of the NBN in Coffs Harbour is expected to go on line in 12 months but other local FSAMs will be announced over the coming months.
Each new area will be publicised with a map showing the premises involved and a public meeting, hosted by the NBN Co.
The date of the first meeting is expected to be announced shortly.
