Suicide Squad sets box office record despite bad reviews

SUICIDE Squad's ragtag team of baddies has plenty of fans despite the film's critics.

When the embargo on reviews lifted on Wednesday, the film received mostly negative reviews.

But that didn't stop thousands of Aussies from going to the cinema to see it on opening day.

The action film based on the characters from DC Comics has taken $3,213,153 at the Australian box office on its opening day, making it the biggest opening day ever in August.

The anti-superhero movie currently has just a 26% approval rating from 247 reviewers on critic aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, which faced backlash from DC fans.

The film earned $129 million in its first three days globally, cementing its widespread appeal.

While the film has been criticised for its muddled story line,  Aussie star Margot Robbie has been praised for her captivating portrayal of Harley Quinn.

Robbie is reportedly in talks with Warner Brothers for her own Harley Quinn spin-off movie.
