Veterans recall warries for kids

A THIRD generation war veteran is calling on former servicemen and women to share their stories in local schools.

Garry Heskett, a Vietnam veteran from Boambee, wants to complement history theory with practical sessions where students can meet veterans, see their photos, touch their medals and memorabilia, and get a real handle on what they went through.

“These sessions give students a chance to interact with veterans and are a rare opportunity to engage in conversation with the men and women who have endured the wars they are learning about,” Mr Heskett said.

“They can ask questions and gain practical knowledge to assist in their history studies. It’s a great interaction for both the kids and veterans and is all about sharing the knowledge.”

Mr Heskett is co-ordinating the RSL Veterans in School Program and has an event at Bishop Druitt College on March 22. He is calling on war veterans to ‘share the knowledge’ and participate in the program.
