Strong team set to start the year off with a bang

THE Mackay Cutters are set to unleash Kiwi wrecking ball Sala Falelua-Malio after the November signing shed 10kgs over the Summer.

Labeled the best forward in New Zealand outside of the Warriors, the Former Auckland A Grader will be one new Cutter making his debut in the club's first trial against the CQ Capras at BB Print Stadium on Saturday.

Hit with the flu, the Cutters are missing Kellen Jenner, Jordan Kenworthy, Jayden Hodges and Ross Bella but have named the likes of former Cowboys under-20 Marcus Jensen and new Captain Cooper Bambling.

Cutters coach Steve Sheppard said he was looking forward to seeing Blake Atherton, Yamba Bowie and Jayden Batchelor perform on the weekend.

"The boys have been training really well this week and every player deserves their spot,” he said.

"I'm happy with how they are all tracking.

"The Capras won their trial match last week so they might have a little edge over us, but that's fine, it's just a trial.

"It's a good chance to see where our skills are at and practise some combinations.”

Six pre-season 'train and trial' players will hit the field this weekend including Darcy Head, Masi Nona, Leroy Broughton, Rik Koebel, Dan Moveoa and Corey McGannon.

"There is a really good local contingent with those players, they have been really committed and worked hard and it's important they play well on the weekend and put their best foot forward to try and gain a contract,” he said.

Sheppard said he was confident all three grades would perform against the Capras on Saturday, and hopefully some good weather.
