Strong Coffs flavour in Cup field

WITH five Coffs Harbour horses in the final field for Thursday's Carlton Mid Coffs Harbour Gold Cup plus an emergency, there's a strong chance of a local win.

Punters who make their way trackside on Thursday will be able to put their money on Erinsea, One Lickety Split, Save A Buck, Toucan Ukelele or Geronimo Jack if they think a horse with home track knowledge can salute the judges first in the big race.

The Joe Janiak trained Bondit may also sneak into the field if there are some scratchings as he's been named as the third emergency.

A full field has accepted for the big race with Youthful Jack named as the top weight.

The Ross Stitt trained gelding who has earned almost $1 million in prizemoney will be asked to carry eight more kilo's than the majority of the field.

Pepperwood is the only other entry being asked by the handicapper to carry more than 54kg around for the mile long feature event.

The Eagle Farm based gelding will be carrying 58.5kg when Liam Birchley brings him down.

While Legendary Man's victory in the 2009 Gold Cup was claimed by locals as a home town win due to the proud owners being Coffs Harbour people, technically it wasn't a local win as trainer Ken Lantry had moved his stables from Coffs Harbour to Newcastle.

The last time a horse trained in Coffs Harbour won the Coffs Cup was back in 1991 when a young Glenn Colless steered home the Brian Balding trained Sabre Luck to victory.
