Strictly Ballroom The Musical coming to Brisbane
THE colourful, glittering Aussie classic Strictly Ballroom will debut in Brisbane later this year.
The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmman's award-winning film will premiere on September 9 at QPAC's Lyric Theatre, it was announced today.
The show, which had its global premiere in Sydney in April last year and is currently playing in Melbourne, stars fresh faces Thomas Lacey as Scott and Phoebe Panaretos as Fran.
"It's a very uplifting, joyous show," Lacey told APN.
"Baz really wanted to keep true to the film, the story and the play he originally did first at NIDA. Having him direct the whole show was really special."
The two young actors lead a cast of 43 including Bob Baines as Les Kendall, Drew Forsythe as Doug Hastings, Natalie Gamsu as Abuela, Robert Grubb as Barry Fife, Fernando Mira as Rico, Heather Mitchell as Shirley Hastings and Mark Owen-Taylor as JJ Silvers.
The musical, which tells the story of champion ballroom dancer Scott as he defies the restrictive rules of the sport, features a mix of songs from the 1992 film including Love is in The Air and new songs written by Eddie Perfect and Sia.
Lacey said he and his co-star have been able to put their own stamps on the iconic characters originally played on the big screen by Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice.
The 21-year-old is best known for his role in the ABC's teen drama Dance Academy.
"Phoebe and I have taken the characters and run with it," he said.
"Getting to dance Scott's solo every night is very special to me. I have a lot of creative license.
"He (Luhrmann) wanted me to bring my own personal flavour and feelings to the show. I've been very fortunate to be able to do my own thing."
Strictly Ballroom The Musical opens at QPAC's Lyric Theatre on September 9. Tickets go on sale on March 2.
