Strange with the PGA lead midway through opening round

WESTERN Australian Scott Strange leads the Australian PGA Championship midway through the opening round.

The 35-year-old started in strong fashion with birdies on the testing 10th and 11th holes before adding another on the par-four 16th.

He then picked up three more shots on the front nine, at the 3rd, 5th holes and 9th holes.

A two-time winner on the European Tour, Strange held a one-stroke lead over China's Zhang Xin Jun and Singapore's Choo Tze-huang.

Australian Open champion Peter Senior was lurking another stoke back.

Early in the morning, Greg Norman withdrew with illness after two holes.

Former US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy, tournament favourite John Senden, defending champion Greg Chalmers and local hope Steven Bowditch are among the afternoon competitors.
