Stores sticking together in tough economic times

SUZIE Hunting isn't afraid to admit 2015 has been the toughest year at her Yeppoon store.

The owner of Kaboozie's Lollies and Gifts yesterday said Cyclone Marcia was to blame for much of the downturn.

Suzie said Yeppoon locals were still struggling, with some having to move from rental properties and others left footing the damage bill for uninsured homes.

She said she was excited by the proposed Yeppoon foreshore development and hoped it would attract more people to the region and local businesses.

Although things are tough now, Suzie said campaigns like Shop 4703 were a big help.

Suzie said before Shop 4703, where Yeppoon businesses banded together to attract customers, it seemed that talking to other owners about problems and sharing ideas was taboo.

She said the diverse group of business owners was now directing customers through to other local stores and coming up with exciting ideas.

"It's really helped me with support," Suzie said. "It's no good one business being profitable and the others not."

Suzie said it was important for business owners to learn new skills and attend workshops.

"I don't see an answer at the moment to what we're going through because you can't make people spend money," Suzie said.

"All we can do is band together… and push forward with the projects council and Capricorn Enterprise have got going."
