Stoner quick to act on highway

THE State’s new Deputy Premier has been quick off the mark to announce safety upgrades for the Pacific Highway and re-affirm a 2016 target for upgrading the roadway.

Oxley MP Andrew Stoner has advised that a central wire safety barrier will be installed on the notorious Clybucca stretch of the Pacific Highway and improvements will be made to the existing concrete surface.

Mr Stoner said he wrote to the former Minister for Roads in February this year calling for immediate measures to be taken to reduce the risk of accidents.

“This is a high crash zone and it is vitally important that all reasonable measures are taken to reduce the risk of deadly head-on collisions,” Mr Stoner said.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals successfully campaigned for these improvements at Clybucca from Opposition and, as the NSW Government, we are now in a position to address the backlog of problems on the State’s roads, including the upgrade of the Pacific Highway.

“The only real way to fix the many black spots on the Pacific Highway is for the road to be upgraded to dual carriageway.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals are committed to road safety and plan for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway to be completed by 2016.

“In the interim, it is important that safety measures, including wire rope barriers and improvements to road surfaces, are introduced to improve the safety of motorists.”

Mr Stoner said other high crash rate sites were being investigated for the future installation of wire rope safety barriers.
