SECURITY was tightened at a Logan mosque after police charged a man who drove his car into the gates of a Stockleigh place of worship on Saturday night.

Police said the man drove his car into the gates just after 6.55pm last night.

They said they had arrested a Browns Plains man, 23, on Buckley Rd, Stockleigh, for a roadside drug test at 2.20pm.

The test revealed a positive result and the driver was issued with a 24hr drivers' licence suspension notice and notice to appear in court to face charges related to driving a vehicle under the influence of a drug.

Police said when they released the man from custody, he returned to his car on Buckley Rd and then, police claimed, he drove his car along Neville St, pulled into the driveway of the mosque.

Police claimed the man then drove his car into the closed front gates causing minor damage to the gates.

He allegedly then shouted offensive words through the open driver's window at people inside, before driving home where he was arrested and further charged with wilful damage and being a public nuisance and driving while suspended.

A spokesman for the mosque said the incident was not linked to the New Zealand massacre.

"The incident at our Stockleigh mosque was a random incident," the spokesman said.

"Our mosque is not under lockdown.

"The Stockleigh mosque is not for us only. It is the whole community's mosque. All activities continue as normal and the doors of the mosque are always open to all."

On Friday, hours after the New Zealand massacre, the Stockleigh Ahmadiyya Muslim

Community missionary in charge, Imam Wadood Janud, issued a statement decrying the shootings.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the victims and their families," he said.

"This was a deliberate and targeted attack on innocent worshippers on the most Holy

day for Muslims. It demonstrates that terror has no religion and knows no bounds.

"This is indeed a very sad day for all. My thoughts and prayers are with the

victims and their families. It is critical that at this time we all remain united

against hatred, division and bigotry. All extremists share a common goal to divide

our community and spread fear and we must make sure they are not successful.

"I urge all to remain calm and continue attending their local Mosques. We must not

bow down to terrorists."

Mosques around Logan have all dedicated tribute services today and people have been placing floral posies at the gate of places of worship at Eagleby, Logan Central and
