11-year-old inventor is a master of microgenerators

ALSTONVILLE Public School student Kairo Byrne's inventive idea - the Super Helpful Origin Energiser (SHOE) - could win her a trip to NASA Cape Kennedy Space Centre in the US.

The 11-year-old is spruiking a creative concept of microgenerators that store and collect energy, fit into shoes and power exercise equipment as part of Origin Energy's littleBIGidea competition.

The Originators could collect energy from walking and running to power a pocket sized battery capable of recharging a variety of technology - including those pesky, fast-draining batteries in smartphones.

Kairo's parents, Catherine Byrne and Alex Smith, are both involved in scientific or technological pursuits and it seems the leaf hasn't fallen far from the tree.

"It would be really good because even in primary school we're always running around at lunch and the energy could make free power," Kairo said.

"I found out about it in the holidays, so I started working on it then."

Kairo, who has been talking her Year 6 classmates into joining the competition, was hopeful she would soon visit the hallowed space centre, which has been used for every NASA human space flight since 1968.

"It would be so good to be able to experiment with the zero gravity," she exclaimed.
