Singer and songwriter Kada taking stages by storm
HER first love was Alicia Keys - now years later she's taking her own stages by storm.
Singer and songwriter Kada has taken a love of music and taken it all the way from Sawtell to Los Angeles.
"It pretty much started when I was two, my mum bought me a play piano," Kada said.
Moving from the Central Coast to Sawtell as a teenager, Kada - also known as Kathryn Southwell - used her spare time to listen to music.
"I started listening to Mariah Carey and especially Alicia Keys; she was the first time I really started playing and singing at the same time."
This soon led to attempts to write her own songs, and became a permanent fixture of Kada's day.
"I guess it became just my every-day life, whatever I was feeling writing songs was an outlet for me," she said.
"Whenever I was feeling down as soon as I started singing it would all go away."
It wasn't until she went to America for the first time that Kada seriously considered a career in music.
"I was surrounded by people trying to reach their goals, I think from seeing that it was a very positive environment," she said.
"I started thinking, if they're all chasing their dreams, why can't I? I always deep down wanted to but was scared."
She took the plunge and began singing at open mic nights just for fun - but it wasn't long before a friend of a friend introduced her to the label she'd end up signing with, MNO Records.
With a debut EP due out this month, and a support slot on the Kid Mac tour, she's riding high.
