Family move onto St Bee’s Island for sea change

A FAMILY seeking a change of scenery has come up with a novel solution - they're leasing an island.

St Bee's Island, about 30km from Mackay, has changed hands, going to a family that has moved there from the Gold Coast.

Mackay and Marina Real Estate licensee Kim Griffiths said the new leaseholders genuinely wanted a sea-change.

"It was a nice lifestyle change for these people," he said. "They were at the Gold Coast and there's a fair bit of hustle and bustle there.

"The new islanders are looking forward to adding another chapter to the St Bees story."

Mr Griffiths said in the spirit of the idyllic island life, the first project planned for St Bees was a vegetable garden.

Homestead Bay is the only settlement on the island and has been home to several people over the years. "The beautiful little bay has three cottages, lots of coconut trees and all the time in the world," Mr Griffiths said.

The new leaseholders will not be the only occupants on the island.

It also has one of the healthiest koala populations in Australia.

There is also a rogue goat population spread throughout the tropical paradise. "The goats have grazed the grassy slopes for decades and the koalas stick to the eucalypts, as they do," Mr Griffiths said.

St Bees once had a grazing lease, with horses and sheep also making the island home, Mr Griffiths said.

The Daily Mercury reported in May last year that the lease was being offered for $985,000.
