Spread your wings in rugby

PREPARATIONS for the 2011 junior rugby union representative season are under way with dates pencilled in for the early trials series at two venues in Mid North Coast zone

Sunday, February 6 is the day when players in the under-16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 years age groups should gather, with the sessions beginning at 3pm and lasting for around two hours.

Trials will be held at Coffs Coast Advocate Rugby Park on Hogbin Drive, Toormina, and at Stuart Park, Hibbard Drive, Port Macquarie.

Experienced coaches and support staff including Matt Leonard, Brendan Hoy, Darren Howe and Laurie O’Shea will take the young men under their wings and guide them through the joys of playing rugby with their mates.

Following an information session, the lads will have a squad discussion before heading into skills training and a short game.

They should dress for the occasion in shorts, T-shirt and runners and not forget to bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen.

Most importantly – before attending the sessions, each player is asked to have a think about what they enjoy about the game of rugby union before identifying two different positions they feel they have the skills to occupy.

If in doubt, seek guidance from their nearest rugby club coach.

A further gathering will occur at Crescent Heads Rugby Grounds on February 13 from 10am, starting with an information session.

This is an enormous opportunity for young rugby players to spread their wings in the game, possibly leading to inclusion in zone teams to represent at the NSW Rugby Union Country Championships later in the year.
