Sporting chance of a lifetime

THIS morning, Mylestom's Bree Rooney departs with a squad of girls from across Northern NSW for Europe to take part in more than a month's worth of training and playing football.
The trip to Germany has been described as the opportunity of a lifetime for a young football player spending 32 days rubbing shoulders with the game's elite and having access to a World Cup-winning coach.

Rooney admitted yesterday that she can't wait to get over there.

"I just want to play football and get the experience up," the 19-year-old said.

"There's definitely a lot of improvement that I need to find but I'm willing to do the work as I go running and cycling every day.

"So it's not the fitness I just need to learn a bit more of the tricky little skills."

The squad, which will represent the New England-based Joeys FC United, will initially stay at Braunhausen, which is part of the Sports School Saarbruecken, a university which hosts elite athletes from Germany and around the world.
They'll then move on to another sports school at Potsdam for the second half of the tour.

While in Germany, Rooney and the others will fall under the watchful eye of not only world-class coaches but also be seen by many talent scouts always on the lookout for the next big thing.

"I'm not putting too much pressure on myself," the marine science student said.
"I don't have to make a selection squad, obviously I'll try and do the best that I possibly can but if an offer comes up I'll try and grab it."
