Sporting achiever invited to speak
IF YOU’RE looking for someone who personifies the Aussie mantra, “Back yourself and just have a crack”, Don Elgin fits the brief.
Hard work, dedication and self-belief saw this boy from country NSW grow into a successful man realising many sporting, business and life goals.
All the more impressive when you learn he was born without the lower portion of his left leg.
After achieving sporting successes including a bronze medal at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic games, and being a triple Paralympic medallist with a silver medal in the 4x400m relay and bronze medals in the pentathlon and 4x100 at the Athens Paralympic Games, Don transferred the skills he learnt as an athlete and applied them to business, establishing Star/Amp Global.
“I really wanted to ensure that other athletes with similar challenges I faced got the support and encouragement they needed to give them their best chance of success,” Don said.
Combined with his professional career as a motivational speaker, Don’s business flourished and now represents several current, and future, world and Olympic champions.
Don stepped up to the role of team manager for the Australian Paralympic Athletics Team in London and, not one to shy away from a challenge, came out of retirement to set his sights on representing Australia in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
At 38 it was always going to be a big ask, but Don’s fighting spirit saw him achieve his goal.
Away from business, Don is a loving husband and father. And this man who inspires so many proudly says it is his family who inspires him to continue to strive and get the most out of life.
During celebrations for International Day of People With Disability, Don Elgin has been invited to speak in Coffs Harbour. All welcome to this free event, 10.30am on December 3 at C.ex Coffs. RSVP 6659 1325 or sally.barrington@
