Coffs set for winter racing

A NEW winter off-shore racing series begins this Sunday from Coffs Harbour Yacht Club.

Owner-skipper of Renee, Garry Innes, said the success of the Bellbowrie Motors Twilight series which concluded last month had prompted fleet members to defy the winter chills and head back onto the water.

“The big difference is the spinnakers will feature for spectacular racing and the really fast boats will get their chance to fly,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a spinnaker on Renee so I’m resigned to finishing stone motherless last with my only hope picking up something on handicap.

“I might have to see if the new financial year allows me to raid the piggy bank to buy one.”

Racing begins at 1.30pm and continues every second Sunday until September.

Boats will leave the harbour and follow a course past Park Beach and Macauleys Headland with some races routed to include the rounding of Split Solitary or North Solitary Islands.
