Speedster’s fine a life changer

"JAFFA" has been speeding on the Yeppoon-Rockhampton Road for the past 10 years.

Then one day he saw himself on the end of a hefty fine and six lost points, and something in him just changed.

"I live in Yeppoon and work in Parkhurst... I drive back and forth on that stupid road.

"For years I have always sped to work and sped home," Jaffa said.

"The other day I flew past a black Commodore ute... I was doing nearly 140kmh and they put their lights on.

"I lost six points and that is my fault, no excuses."

Since getting caught, Jaffa has been doing the speed limit each and every day on his way to work, and on his way home.

And in doing so, the 50-year-old has made a discovery that has changed both his life and his budget.

"I have doubled my fuel efficiency... I was quite shocked at how stupid I have been over the years... and all for the sake of four minutes," he said.

"That is how much time I was saving by doing 120kmh every day. There was no need for me to be in a rush.

"For years I have been wasting money and wasting petrol."

Jaffa said he wanted to get the message out to other motorists, particularly as the Easter road safety campaign kicked off over the weekend.

"There would be other cars that are doing it for years but maybe if they stopped and looked at how much fuel they're wasting they wouldn't," he said.

"I have learned my lesson.

"I am more relaxed now and more comfortable. I have changed my whole sort of outlook on the road... now if I get stuck behind someone doing 80kmh I don't mind, it's no big deal."
