Special camera to help stillborn grieving process

ALTHOUGH the Grafton Base Hospital's newest piece of equipment is a simple Nikon Coolpix, maternity ward nurses will use it for a very special purpose.

The camera will available to families who wish to be photographed with their stillborn babies to help with the grieving process.

Clinical midwifery specialist Katie Dobbin applied for the camera when she saw a giveaway on Heartfelt's Facebook page.

Heartfelt is an organisation that connects hospitals to professional photographers who work with families with their stillborn babies but when they cannot provide a photographer they provide a camera.

"There is never enough to provide for families who have lost their child," Mrs Dobbin said.

"We take the photos and it is up to the family if they want them.

"I am really grateful Heartfelt had this giveaway."

Heartfelt secretary Vivian Hayles said the camera sent to Grafton hospital was one of 96 distributed around the country.

"They provide the gift of memories," Ms Hayles said.

"Every family will have a different way to grieve. One of their biggest fears is they will forget their baby, forget what their feet were like.

"With the photographer being there it validates the baby instead of the memory dusted under the carpet, it makes the experience more real."

Ms Hayles said women were usually in shock and their memories would be foggy.

"They've got hardly any idea what went on in those days. Those photographs fill in those gaps."
