APPARENTLY while I was spearing in the Coral Sea, Coffs had some good weather which allowed many divers an opportunity to find mackerel and a host of other really good species.

I have heard many stories although there have not been many photographs.

A reminder to all divers, March 31-April 2sees the running of the 2017 Classic. Entry fee is $70, with the whole of Saturday free for diving. Only five fish may be weighed and Marine Rescue will benefit from the auction which will be conducted again this year. Everyone is encouraged to get to the Woolgoolga reserve at 2pm for the weigh-in and the auction.

Reports have also reached me of several divers encountering white sharks around the Big Island.

One account was of a white shark jumping out of the water a few times. I have also heard of someone north of us reporting no less than 17 encounters with white sharks this year already. In 35 years of spearing, I have never seen one.

The club recently hosted its awards evening. Only two trophies had no contenders: cobia and gold spot wrasse, otherwise great examples of all of our highly prized species were taken.
