Southside ready for strong 2010

SOUTHSIDE Hockey Club is set for a strong 2010 with the return of former local junior Heath Edwards as captain-coach of the Men’s A-grade squad.

In recent years Edwards has played in Newcastle under New South Wales coach David Willott.

He was also a member of the Northern Strikers premier league team who were Sydney premiers in 2009.

“I’m very keen to develop the strong junior base at the club, including NSW under-15 star Sam Anderson who will be one of the players to watch in 2010,” he said.

Southside held the AGM last week with Simon Shipman taking over from popular and hardworking outgoing president, Kel Wilton.

The Shipman family are all involved in hockey with Christopher a key player for the club.

“We’re looking to sign up men, women, boys and girls of all standards for the season,” the new president said.

“The aim is for a women’s team in both divisions one and two if the numbers permit.”

The club has been strong in the junior ranks through the continued great work done by Bruce Barnier and star A-grade players Dean Herbert and Chris Shipman will assist the youngsters with skill sessions.
