South Korea backs away from whaling

SOUTH Korea will not be hunting whales, not even for "scientific research".

It follows the nation revealing at an International Whaling Commission meeting that it would start the practice, using the one exemption - scientific research - to a world ban on killing the ocean mammals.

But Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr said that after a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Kim Sung-hwan at the East Asia Summit this week, there appeared to be a change of heart.

"Korea has committed itself to green growth, and is capable of becoming a global green superpower," Senator Carr said after the meeting in Cambodia.

"Its green credentials would not be compromised.

"I acknowledge the nation's responsiveness and leadership."

Australian Ambassador in Seoul Sam Gerovich had previously warned of Australia's strong opposition to a whaling last week.
