South Burnett teams fire up barbies for BaconFest Smoke-Off
BEFORE Kingaroy's inaugural BaconFest, Matt McBride admits that he "wasn't a big barbecue-type person”.
But, on Sunday, August 25 he will line up to compete in the Sunpork Smoke-Off Barbecue Competition for the second time.
He will lead Matt Sauer and Chris O'Rourke as they join forces in the team Up in Smoke.
"It was a very new experience, but it was something that I loved so that is why we are doing it again,” Mr McBride said.
"I wasn't a big barbecue-type person, but now that everyone is getting into, it is something that everyone is willing to try.”
The trio will come up against some of Australia's best teams including defending champions, Angus Reserve BBQ Crew, who are ranked fifth in the country for their barbecue skills.
While Mr McBride, the bakery manager at Kingaroy Woolworths, Mr Sauer, the manager of Kingaroy Big W, and Mr O'Rourke, the manager of Kingaroy Shoppingworld, don't plan on breaking any records, they do intent on making their town proud.
"There is always room for improvement and learning,” Mr McBride said.
"We will be alongside some of Australia's top teams and we are not in to win it, but we will give it a go and we will represent Kingaroy.”
Up in Smoke will be joined by fellow South Burnett teams Carnivore Kitchen and GPP Pork Kings for their chance to win $500 as the best South Burnett team, thanks to The Little Butcher, and have their name inscribed on a shield to be displayed at the store.
Bacon lovers have the chance to get a taste of what some of Australia's best barbecue teams cook up by becoming a judge of the SunPork Smoke-Off.
