Soul to Sole under way

THANKS to the generosity of local basketballers the first shipment of donated basketball shoes will leave Coffs Harbour this week bound for the tiny island nation of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

Under FIBA Oceania’s “Soul to Sole – From our hearts to your feet” project, Australian basketball associations are providing slightly used or new basketball shoes and joggers to disadvantaged young people across the Pacific.

FSM is a country of 607 tiny islands, 50 per cent of the population is under 25 years of age and basketball is the number one sport in the country.

However, with an annual average income of just $2500, very few families can afford to purchase basketball shoes. Donations of children’s shoes will go directly to schools in FSM, so we would be particularly delighted to be able to send lots of children’s shoes in our next shipment.

So, if you are cleaning out the shoe cupboard and find basketball shoes or joggers that could be donated to this program, please drop them in the grey bin located just off court 1 at Sportz Central.
