GARRY Wait has been invited to hold a solo exhibition at Montreal's Gora Gallery in 2009.
The Coffs Harbour artist, who has become known for his colourful collages, is the latest Coffs Coast creative spirit to be invited to exhibit overseas through mysartspace.com.
In fact he said he had been the person to introduce the site to Arts Mid North Coast.
This site opened the door for Sawtell painter Danielle Burford to take her work to New York.
The opportunity does not come cheaply, with Mr Wait estimating that taking his solo exhibition to Canada will probably cost more than $15,000, a huge sum for an artist who has to survive on a disability pension.
But Garry Wait is determined to take the chance.
“It opens up the door to international opportunities,” he said.
He has exhibited locally since 2003 and has submitted work to the selection committee for the first Focus exhibition, which will open on December 12.
The artist works with a variety of media, from paint to photography, but it is his collages that have had the wow factor with viewers, who have found them fresh and appealing.
Necessity was literally the mother of invention for the painter.
“I found myself back on a pushbike for a while, I had a lot of magazines lying around and I wanted to generate enough money to buy a cheap car,” he said.
