Sky’s the limit with airship ads

IF IT HAD a name I guess it would be called something like "blimp buzz advertising".

That explosion on social media of pictures of an airship floating over a city.

That's exactly what happened in Coffs Harbour this week, as sightings of the airship caused a stir on social media.

Our front page today even features an image captured from the blimp, as Advocate staff took a sightseeing tour.

As we looked skyward while we were stuck in traffic or standing in the shadow of the airship on the beach or in the backyard, there was no denying the impact of the advertising ploy.

From our observations just about every reply on social media to the question "what's that blimp all about?" carried an explanation promoting the naming rights company appliancesonline.com.au.

It's a social media advertising ploy that has worked wonders across the US, bending to the public's century-long fascination with commercial airships.

The largest airship in the southern hemisphere, it flies best in fair weather so naturally Coffs Harbour was a perfect destination.

For many tourists, shivering in the frost west of the divide no doubt the Coffs Coast will be just as inviting this long weekend.
