Skaters happy with council's plan

SKATERS are applauding Coffs Harbour City Council’s proposal to locate a planned regional skate park on the southern side of Brelsford Park.

Councillors have voted to amend the Brelsford Park Master plan for work on Stage 2, ‘subject to further investigation regarding the location of a regional skate park facility’.

Removal of the planned ‘footprint’ for a performance space and art gallery, now planned for City Hill, has freed up space in the park plan.

Deputy mayor Cr Denise Knight said the new master plan for Stage 2 would be put on public exhibition.

Council’s acting general manager Ben Lawson said a date had not been set for the new plan for Brelsford to go on show, but the council acknowledged the level of interest in the skate park.

“We are keen to capitalise on this with input from the community by getting this moving as soon as possible,” he said.

Mr Lawson said funding options would be examined in detail when the matter was reported back to council.

“Brelsford Park is definitely our preferred location,” said Alister Scotford, one of the members of Coffs Harbour Extreme Riders Inc. He said the list of locations had ‘boiled down to’ North Wall at the Jetty and Brelsford Park

“It (Brelsford) is central and it is easy to get to by bus.

“When you are near salt, you have a lot of problems with concrete and steel, so this is a less corrosive environment and not as open to the wind as the foreshores.”

He said a regional skate park would be used not only by skaters, but by BMX riders, scooter riders and rollerbladers

“It is a big industry,” Mr Scotford said.
