Size boost helps our Crows soar in two great wins

AUSSIE RULES: Mackay's under 17 girls side may feature many rookies but this hasn't stopped the team from securing two professional wins at the Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships.

The Events by Romona Mackay Crows defeated the Townsville Eagles on Thursday and flew pas the Wide Bay Wildcats on Friday afternoon.

"On Thursday against Townsville it was a slow start, nerves were a factor for our rookie players,” Mackay Crows coach Matt Bateman said.

"However, the girls came out firing in the second half of the game and there was no stopping them.”

The Mackay side features three girls over 180cm tall adding a much needed size boost to the squad.

"Our side is bigger and better and I think this gives more confidence to the girls.

"In both games Maddy McDonald has been outstanding as a rookie player,” Bateman said.

"Our second game against Wide Bay started of slow as well and we were down at the half.

"However, the girls came out firing in the third and our taller players made an impact in the game.”

Bateman believes the momentum from the two wins will carry over into today's game.

"We are playing Papua New Guinea so we know we have our hands full,” Bateman said on Friday.

"Although as these tournaments go teams hit their stride in the later games so I'm confident we can get the victory.”
