One dead, five hurt in crash

A HEAD-ON collision at Valla has claimed the life of a male driver.

About 2.30pm yesterday a Mitsubishi sedan heading south collided with a northbound vehicle carrying five passengers.

The adult male driver of the Ford Fairmont was killed and a six-year-old passenger remains in a critical condition after she was airlifted to Sydney's Westmead Hospital by the Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the fatality.

The remaining three passengers and two occupants of the northbound vehicle were all taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital reportedly suffering minor injuries.

Holiday traffic was thrown into chaos following the accident as the area was isolated while the accident investigation unit gathered information and the road was cleared for the arrival of the rescue helicopter.

The high impact head-on collision left debris strewn all over the road and a tarpaulin remained over the southbound vehicle for quite some time.

Five ambulances arrived at the scene along with emergency services personnel and rescue crews.

Following the accident, Nambucca Police Inspector Anne Joy was on hand warning people to take extra care on the busy roads.
