'Similar body shape' costs Watmough

WAS he dropped or not?

Confusion seemed to be the name of the game south of the border yesterday regarding Anthony Watmough's axing from the New South Wales State of Origin team for game one in Melbourne next Wednesday.

When the Blues team was announced on Sunday, coach Ricky Stuart said Watmough was not named because the shoulder injury he'd picked up in Manly's win over the Broncos last Friday would prevent him from training in the lead-up to next week's showdown.

However, the 28-year-old trained with his Manly teammates yesterday morning and his coach Geoff Toovey is confident that he'll play against the Sydney Roosters at Brookvale on Sunday.

Toovey also said Watmough was disappointed with his non-selection.

But wait there's more to this story.

Stuart went on radio yesterday to end any confusion, but did he? Or did he simply add to it?

Apparently having a 'similar body shape' to three other players was the reason Watmough was left out of the team - there was no mention of injury or a lack of form.

"Paul Gallen, Glenn Stewart and Greg Bird all have similar body shapes, and Anthony's isn't much different," Stuart said.

"I explained all of this over the phone to him, he (Watmough) knows I have deep respect for the way he plays.

"I wanted a different balance, that is one of the reasons I picked Tony Williams. He offers a point of difference, it was a telling factor."
