Sign up for sport at weekend expo

THIS weekend's popular Sports Expo and Sign-on Day will feature a revamped layout to help with pedestrian flow through the venue.

Presented by major sponsor Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, this annual one-stop shop for locals looking to get active and involved with a sport, club or recreational pursuit, always draws a large crowd.

With two active zones in action near the entrance to the expo this year, a large "dartboard” provided by Optus has been relocated to the rear of the halls.

"The dartboard was a feature for the first time last year and was extremely popular with kids,'' said Sports Expo and Sign-on Day Committee chair Cr Kevin Casey.

"They line up and take turns kicking balls at the dartboard target,'' he said.

"This year it will be near football stalls at the rear of the hall and will be a real drawcard in that area.”

There will be more than 100 sport and recreation clubs under one roof and attendees will have the chance to meet some of their local sporting heroes and grab an autograph.

This event allows residents, both new to sport and experienced, to see what's on offer and make an educated decision when picking a new sport or recreational activity.

The region's state league teams such as Mackay's National Premier League (NPL) football (soccer) team Magpies Crusaders United; rugby league's Mackay Cutters; basketball's Meteors and Meteorettes; and netball's Northern Rays, will be special guests at the expo.

Throughout the day, the active zones will include demonstrations in kendo, boxing, dance, Sporting Wheelies, Rugby Tots and gymnastics. With two active zones operating, the action will be non-stop.

The event is a Mackay Regional Council initiative, sponsored by the major sponsor Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, Optus, Hail Creek Open Cut Glencore, and Star FM.
