Sign on with Souths

RUGBY LEAGUE: Today is a chance for Mackay juniors to follow in the footsteps of rugby league legends Wendell Sailor, Daly Cherry Evans and Brett Seymour - with the Souths Juniors sign on.

Souths have produced countless footy stars, and given 100s of Mackay kids the opportunity to have a go at the game - no matter their ability.

The club is kicking off its season with a sign on day for U6-17s teams on Sunday, February 5 at Souths Leagues Club from 10am to 12 noon.

As one of the first four Mackay junior clubs who started the league in 1966, many Souths junior players have gone on to bright futures.

Souths Registrar Doug Knight said their junior teams were open to children of any skill level to join in, as the focus was on skill development and teamwork.

"We're a nursery, where players who have come through the Club have gone to join NRL clubs as well as to represent Queensland and Australia internationally,” Mr Knight said.

"Some of these kids even go on to high level achievements while they are still at the junior level - like Brett Seymour, a former Souths player who captained Australia's Under 15s team and went on to play for the Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors and Cronulla Sharks.”

Souths Junior Rugby League has been significant part of the Souths family history, and Mackay's own history.

To celebrate this contribution to the community, Souths Mackay will be hosting a reunion on July 28-30 weekend for all past players, coaches, directors, parents, staff and supporters.

"Souths have provided 100s of Mackay region children with the opportunity to play rugby league, no matter their ability, and to form lifelong friendships,” Mr Knight said.

"This reunion is a chance for all the mates who are scattered far and wide to get together and celebrate what Souths has done for them, and for Mackay.”
