Shorten wants republic debate on monarchy
LABOR leader Bill Shorten has called for the debate on a republic to be renewed, rather than wait for Queen Elizabeth to die.
In a speech on Thursday night, Mr Shorten said while the Queen had fulfilled her responsibilities with grace, he did not believe Australia should wait for a "change of monarch" to debate becoming a republic.
He said 16 years on from the failed republic referendum, a "new generation" needed to have their say.
