Shops close in respect of Anzacs

STOCK up before Anzac Day because Coffs Harbour businesses will be shut until 1pm on Saturday.

And any retailers who opens on Anzac Day morning could face fines of up to $11,000.

Major shopping centres Park Beach Plaza and Centro Toormina told the Advocate they will be closed until 1pm on Saturday.

Marketing manager for Centro Toormina, Kylie Sagan, said that Centro will be 'absolutely' enforcing the laws that State retailers cannot open before 1pm.

“It's the one day of the year you don't compromise on,” Ms Sagan said.

Park Beach Plaza's website states that on Anzac Day the larger stores of Big W, Target, Woolworths, and Ritchie's IGA will be open from 1pm, and speciality stores opening hours are optional.

“The centre will not be open before 1pm out of respect for the Anzacs,” Caroline Bleechmore, marketing manager of Park Beach Plaza said.

“We've chosen not to open out of respect,” Morrison's proprietor Howard Morrison said. Morrison's Electrical Megastore would be exempt from the trading laws based on their company size.

“I think it's a time for remembrance, and what these guys did for us,” Mr Morrison said.

And Coffs Harbour RSL Sub-Branch president Bob Payne said that many of the Coffs commemoration services are complete by 11.30am.

“I would say out of respect for the day that it is, after 11.30am everything can open,” Mr Payne said.
