Sheeba takes the plunge

THERE is nothing this black dog loves more than diving for a ball.

Sheeba, a bullmastiff ridgeback cross, has a penchant for the water developed after her mother Abbey was hit by a car in December.

The dog's owner Len Murphy borrowed his neighbour's backyard pool to commence hydro-therapy for the paralysed dog, which defied the odds to survive and walk on all fours again.

“Abbey had four severed discs in her back and spent 14 days at a specialist, who advised me to euthanise her,” Mr Murphy said.

“But that wasn't an option. I had a crash course in how to use a catheter and I brought her home.”

Despite Abbey being paralysed in her lower limbs and requiring 24-hour care, three days after returning home she and her daughter were able to play again thanks to Mr Murphy's neighbour Darryl Alsop.

“Darryl gave us permission to fill his empty pool. I put a life jacket on Abbey, a plug in her catheter and taped it up, and she was chasing a ball with Sheeba in the pool,” Mr Murphy said.

“It was her freedom and it has helped her recovery and none of it would have been possible without Daryl.”

Mr Murphy said Mr Alsop had watched Abbey's recovery from poolside, but sadly he died last month after a battle with cancer.

Have you had a pet survive or recover from injury at extreme odds?
