Setback for Yankee Rose in return to racing

RACING: Trainer David Vandyke is unsure if talented Sunshine Coast mare Yankee Rose will contest the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1400m), after she suffered another setback on Saturday.

The four-year-old finished ninth of 11 runners in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, in her first serious run in almost 10 months, after having bone chips removed from her knee.

But things didn't go to plan.

"We noticed her lame when she got back to the stables afterwards," Vandyke said.

"It looks like she's got some bruising to her heel."

Yankee Rose has a history of hoof problems and it's not known if she will be able to race at Flemington.

"We've got her pencilled in for a run in two weeks but it's just a matter of seeing how she is and how she gets over this lameness," Vandyke said.

With Dean Yendall aboard, she jumped soundly in the $1 million Memsie and settled towards the back of the pack.

But when they got to the final turn, Yankee Rose struggled to find her stride and the pre-race $17 chance finished almost four lengths behind the winner, Vega Magic ($2.25fav)

Vandyke said the pace of the race in the early and middle stages did not help her chances and he said "Dean lost the reins at the 300 which didn't help matters."

He couldn't guarantee the jockey the ride if she does race at Flemington.

"I'll put it to the syndicate and let them decide," he said.

Yankee Rose won Group 1 races in 2015 and 2016 and she was also third in the prestigious $3 million Cox Plate (2020m) last year.
