ROD Laver Arena heats up this week with the start of the Australian Open.

Tennis stars including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Bernard Tomic will battle it out for the first Grand Slam title of 2013, which is already shaping up to be one of the richest prize pools of the year.

Australian Open Tennis - Seven - starts Monday at 9.30am Qld, 10.30am NSW.

Sunrise sports commentator Mark Beretta says it was "quite an honour" to make his debut as Seven's new Australian Open host.

"When we were kids growing up in Geelong my mum was a tennis nut," he said.

"We could always mark the start of summer by when the TV got locked on Channel 7 and the tennis. It's a personal buzz for me."

Beretta will be bringing the latest tennis news to viewers each morning and crossing to the commentary team, which includes Bruce McAvaney, Jim Courier, Lleyton Hewitt, Todd Woodbridge, Sam Smith and Giaan Rooney.

"We have incredible tennis minds there," he said. "I feel like a Year 12 student heading into exams (laughs).

"I've been watching everything to do with tennis at the moment, following players on Twitter and their movements."

Beretta reckons Serena Williams is the woman to beat this year.

"She's been slamming down 200kmh serves at the moment; they're like lightning to stop," he said.

"Sam Stosur is due for a good Australian Open, but it's going to be a big ask for her with her recent ankle surgery."

A self-confessed Federer fan, Beretta believes the former World No 1 can still dominate the competition, but it's Aussie Lleyton Hewitt who's back in top form.

"He's in a good spot at the moment. He's got that Lleyton hunger back again, which is really exciting to watch," he said.
