Police appeal for witnesses after woman, 55, dies in crash
UPDATE: 8.20am, July 16:
POLICE have urged any further witnesses to come forward after a head-on crash where a 55-year-old woman died on Wednesday.
The car, a Mitsubishi Magna station wagon, travelling east, and a light truck, travelling west, collided on Tweed Valley Way near Riverside Dr, Tumbulgum about 2.45pm.
The 45-year-old male truck driver was taken to Tweed Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and underwent mandatory blood and urine testing.
Police established a crime scene and the road, between both ends of Riverside Dr, was closed for several hours.
As investigations into the crash continue, Tweed/Byron Local Area Command police have appealed for any further witnesses to come forward.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
A WOMAN has died after a head-on collision near Tumbulgum.
Tweed-Byron LAC Inspector Darren Steel said emergency services were called to the scene on Tweed Valley Way at 2.50pm on Wednesday.
Insp Steel said a Mitsubishi station wagon, believed to have been travelling east, collided head-on with a light truck, which was travelling in the westbound lane.
"As a result of the collision, the female driver of the station wagon received serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene," Insp Steel said.
"The male driver of the light truck received minor injuries. He was taken to the Tweed Hospital for examination and compulsory blood and urine testing.
"At this time, police are still investigating the cause of the accident and we are awaiting the arrival of crime scene personnel to make an examination of the scene to assist in determining the cause."
Insp Steel said police believed there were a number of witnesses, and urged anyone with information about the crash who has not yet spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Tweed Heads Police Station on 07 5536 0999.
Police have not yet formally identified the driver of the station wagon.
UPDATE 3.38pm: TWEED Valley Way is blocked in both directions at Tumbulgum.
Traffic is being diverted to Riverside Drive.
INITIAL REPORT 3pm Wednesday July 15: EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a motor vehicle collision near Tumbulgum, where one person is believed to have died.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said ambulance personnel were on scene.
The spokeswoman said they were called out about 2.50pm.
She said one person was trapped and had suffered cardiac arrest.
Tweed District Rescue Squad spokesman Jamie Stoddart said Tweed Valley Way was heavily congested and urged motorists to avoid the area.
