NEW footage from inside the new Polair 2 helicopter has been released by Queensland Police ahead of it taking flight this weekend.

The cockpit video has been posted on YouTube by police, which includes about 11 minutes of flight following by a press conference at the hangar.

Police have also re-released a promotions video on its first chopper, with Jason Greenbury from the Helicopter Support Unit Gold Coast describing its benefits.

"It's the feedback we can give officers that someone might be armed, or about to walk around a corner where someone is hiding," he said.

"I had no idea basically what an aircraft or police aircraft could do."

The first chopper has now been sent on more than 4500 "jobs", including proactive missions or as a response to a call out.

Queensland scores second police helicopter

A NEW crime-fighting helicopter will keep an eye on Queenslanders from Caboolture to Coolangatta and west to the Lockyer Valley, the second commissioned since the LNP took power.

The chopper will cover Moreton Bay, Ipswich and Brisbane regions, helping to supervise a population of more than 1.8 million people while targeting dangerous drivers, catch offenders or "conduct proactive operations".

It will cost $3 million over the next 12 months as part of an $18 million budget for police helicopters over four years.

"The former Government refused to provide Queensland police with one helicopter; we have delivered two in two years," Mr Dempsey said.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the first helicopter had already helped police find offenders, missing persons, drug crops and manage major events.

"Deploying a second police helicopter within south-east Queensland will be a significant boost for policing in the area," he said.

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers said "another eye in the sky" would only be a good thing for officers.
